Unexpected Places

Sorry for the lack of posts lately.
Last weekend, I traveled with a few friends out of the city and into the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.  We were traveling to the wonderful city of Asheville in the
Mountains of North Carolina (will post pictures from this trip soon!).
While traveling home I was struck by how little of the US I have seen.  We drove home through Great Smoky Mountains National Park and I was totally surprised when we hiked up Clingmans Dome which is the highest point in Tennessee.  After you climb the steep path you are greeted by this structure that allows for some amazing 360 degree views.
It was beautiful up there. So glad I got to see it.
Hope to post more soon!

Coffee Talk

Lately life has been rushing by at a pace I just cannot keep up with.
I have been drinking way too much coffee and not getting enough sleep.
I hope things settle down soon so I can return to some sort of blogging routine.
Stay Well,

Tender Buttons

In a desperate search for a matching button for a vintage Burberry Trench Coat my husband dragged me to a store on the Upper East Side called Tender Buttons.Their website claims that they are the only store in the country entirely devoted to buttons.  I have never been or seen another button store myself so I would think that this would be the case.  An entire wall of the store is devoted to displaying the history of buttons and different buttons of historical merit.
(unfortunately I was unable to get any good pictures of those).
The shop was extremely charming. I loved the black and white floor and the great vintage lamps.

The buttons were arranged by color and only the gruff yet loveable clerk was allowed to open the button boxes.
These pumpkin buttons were my favorite.

Button Shopping was followed by breaking into a friends car when they called in a panic after locking their keys in their car. This was followed by celebratory pie and coffee at our favorite local spot Good Enough To Eat.
Their pecan pie cannot be beat.

Yes so that was my exciting Friday night.

Have you ever visited a unique specialty store that only sold one thing?
What is the strangest shop you have ever been to?
Enjoy your Weekend.

Morning Routine

Confession: I am not a morning person.
I think the only time in my life I could easily get up before 8am was when I was in California.  Waking up in CA at 8:00am was easy because it was the equivalent to 11:00am on the East Coast.  My body just naturally wants to get up at 11:00am. I often joke that naturally I am just on California time.  Living in New York however California time is of no help to me.
During the work week, I must leave my house at 7:40am to be able to make my train and get into work on time.  Lately my morning routine has gone completely off the rails.  I hit the snooze button at least 4 times and sleep in past 7:00am which of course leaves me scrambling to get out the door on time. I shower, dress, brush my teeth, put on tiny bit of makeup and run out the door.  No time for breakfast which means I must buy a pastry and a coffee on the way to work. It just does not feel like a healthy way to live. I am constantly exhausted and constantly drinking more and more coffee.
This week I decided that I am slowly going to ease myself into a better morning routine. I would love to be one of those people who can read the paper in the morning over a nice cup of coffee at their kitchen table.  Well perhaps my morning would be slightly different since I don't have a kitchen table or subscribe to a newspaper but sitting at the tiny table squeezed into corner of my small living room and reading online news with a cup of coffee would work too.
So here is the list of things I want to try to slowly ease myself into a better morning routine.
New Morning Routine
1. Every week for six weeks I will set my alarm 10 minutes earlier until I can wake up at 6:00am
2. Set my clothes out the night before. (I find I dress better if its all laid out)
3. Eat Breakfast at home.
4. Brew my own coffee. (I may still take some to go but would love a cup at home)
Future Goal: Once I can get up at 6:00am I would love to do a little exercise in the morning. Nothing crazy maybe a little yoga, a Pilates DVD or 20 minutes of rowing. Just something to get the body going.
Are you a morning person?
Do you have any secrets that make your mornings easier? I would love to hear about them if you do!

New York In Black & White

Recently it seems that everyone in New York City is carrying an old 35mm camera around their neck. Film is back or at least a trend among New Yorkers.  Here are some recently developed black and white photos taken on 35mm over the past couple months. There is a quality to film that digital photos just seem to lack.  The grain and the way the light appears in these photos make it seem like we are looking at the New York of another era. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

My little New Yorker.

Incredible Places: San Jacinto Mountains National Monument

While in Palm Springs we decided to take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It is a great way to see incredible views of the beautiful mountains, canyons and deserts around Palm Springs. It is a ten minute ride up the mountain in a cable car.  You start at an elevation of 2,643 ft and end at 8,516 ft.  You can definitely feel the elevation change.  The temperature changes dramatically and you can also feel it on your body. I felt like it got slightly harder to breath on top of the mountain.
So worth it though for the gorgeous views though.
Fun Fact since 1963 nearly 18 million people have traveled up the tramway!

You start your adventure up the mountain at this great mid-century building.
I do not usually have a problem with heights but I have to say dangling over the mountains in a cable car got a little scary.

Further up the mountain.
The view from the top!
Isn't it just so beautiful? Supposedly you can see the San Andreas Fault line from this mountain top which I thought was so awesome when we finally made it to the top.
We saw so many beautiful birds up at the top. Loved this bird soaring over the desert.
Check out this adorable little guy! What fantastic coloring!
Or this gorgeous fellow
Loved this gnarled old tree dried up in the desert sun.
So wild how much the landscape changed as you moved up the mountain. Just such an incredible place to visit.  If you are in Palm Springs I would highly recommend a trip up the mountain, even if it is a little scary.
Wishing you Happy Travels,
P.S. For more incredible views check out Yosemite National Park and the Pacific Coast Highway.

Tea Leaf Fortune

(image via etsy
I am a sucker for all things tea. Yesterday I stumbled upon a Buzzfeed quiz that definitely tickled my Tea Fancy. I hope my Tea Leaf reading comes true and that Fall will be my exciting time after a slower Spring and Summer. Lately I feel like I cannot catch up on all my responsibilities. Trying to get back my focus this upcoming week.
What did your Tea Leaf Reading Reveal?
Do you believe in fortune tellers?
Or like me do you like to believe in them more than you actually do believe in them?
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
