Cures for the Winter Blues

I may have been born in December, and in the Northeast, but I have always been a summer girl. Growing up on the Jersey Shore the summer just made sense to me.  The boardwalk, the ocean, the cotton candy and the hot summer nights.  I could live in a year round summer.

That being said is it any surprise that the winter blues hit me really hard?

Nothing I found can completely erase my winter angst but here are a few tips to keep the blues at bay.

1. Exercise.
I find that the winter makes me into a total slug. Its dark and cold and I don't want to go outside. I really have to force myself to exercise, but boy does it help.  I suggest signing up for a yoga class or spinning class.  When you pay for something sometimes it forces you to stick to it. Classes can be expensive though and if you cannot afford them I suggest borrowing a fitness DVD from your local library or streaming exercise programs. Anything to get you moving.

2. Vitamins
I know the survey is out on whether or not multi-vitamins in capsule form are actually beneficial, but I like to take some during the winter months to up my vitamin C and Vitamin D (since I'm not getting it from the sun). I suggest a multi-vitamin and getting more fruits and veggies in your diet to help battle the winter doldrums.

3. Aromatherapy
I just recently became an essential oils/ aromatherapy convert.  For the holidays I received this diffuser with three different essential oils.  This grapefruit is my absolute favorite. It is supposed to be uplifting and honestly it really does lift my mood to smell it throughout the apartment. I'm loving it.

4. Throw a Party
Everyone gets a little sour during the winter. What better way to perk up all your friends then to plan and throw a phenomenal cocktail party. The winter is so long without an event to look forward to.

5. Laugh
With how busy we all are its sometimes so easy to forget that laughter is the best medicine. Laughing really does help us to put things in perspective at times. Its the little things in life that keep us going when times are tough, right?  I suggest watching a funny internet video, maybe something with kittens. Get Cozy and read a funny book.  This one is on my list. Or invite your best friends over and watch Reality TV. I suggest RuPaul's Drag Race.

6. Eat A Cookie
Now this one must only be used in the most desperate of times. A donut can be substituted if a cookie can't be found. I suggest cookies from Levain or donuts from Dough. Little bit of sugar really perks me up sometimes but again only in truly dire circumstances.

Hang in there, only 49 days left until Spring.. -- megan
