Morning Routine

Confession: I am not a morning person.
 
I think the only time in my life I could easily get up before 8am was when I was in California.  Waking up in CA at 8:00am was easy because it was the equivalent to 11:00am on the East Coast.  My body just naturally wants to get up at 11:00am. I often joke that naturally I am just on California time.  Living in New York however California time is of no help to me. 
 
During the work week, I must leave my house at 7:40am to be able to make my train and get into work on time.  Lately my morning routine has gone completely off the rails.  I hit the snooze button at least 4 times and sleep in past 7:00am which of course leaves me scrambling to get out the door on time. I shower, dress, brush my teeth, put on tiny bit of makeup and run out the door.  No time for breakfast which means I must buy a pastry and a coffee on the way to work. It just does not feel like a healthy way to live. I am constantly exhausted and constantly drinking more and more coffee.  
 
This week I decided that I am slowly going to ease myself into a better morning routine. I would love to be one of those people who can read the paper in the morning over a nice cup of coffee at their kitchen table.  Well perhaps my morning would be slightly different since I don't have a kitchen table or subscribe to a newspaper but sitting at the tiny table squeezed into corner of my small living room and reading online news with a cup of coffee would work too. 
 
So here is the list of things I want to try to slowly ease myself into a better morning routine.
 
New Morning Routine
1. Every week for six weeks I will set my alarm 10 minutes earlier until I can wake up at 6:00am
2. Set my clothes out the night before. (I find I dress better if its all laid out)
3. Eat Breakfast at home.
4. Brew my own coffee. (I may still take some to go but would love a cup at home)
 
Future Goal: Once I can get up at 6:00am I would love to do a little exercise in the morning. Nothing crazy maybe a little yoga, a Pilates DVD or 20 minutes of rowing. Just something to get the body going.

  1. Ugh yes, I quite like getting up at about 830, thats a nice time for me! I did have a phase where I had to be up at like 630 everyday.. it was tough! Definitely do everything the night before. The only way I found was to go to bed early but of course that never seems to happen!! xx

      Setting stuff out the night before is definitely a big help. I am still no where near being a morning person but its slowly getting a little easier. Thanks for your comments I always love reading them! ~megan

  3. i used to sleep super late every day but now i get up at 9 which is good for me haha...music and coffee always wake me up :)

    1. Agreed 9am is the perfect time! I should try some music in the morning that may help me get into the swing of things a little easier. Thanks for the suggestion. ~megan
